In the present study, an attempt is made to supplement the available information through sample surveys of farmers and other related agencies on the status of crop output and markets using mobile handsets or similar devices. The data collection and transfer would therefore be quicker and it is expected that the exercise will help in the assessment of crop scenario. The work is also supported by the Food and Agriculture Organisation.

A pilot study was carried out in June 2012. Based on the experience in the pilot a more scaled up version of the survey is now under way to cover the rabi food crops. The exercise will be implemented in 2013-14 also. The survey covers about 100 districts spread across all major states, 1000 villages and 10,000 farmers. The actual sample size in kharif and rabi seasons will vary depending on the crops covered.
